Remember; Social Media Can Save Your Event

Image
Learning how to socialize events is extremely important when it comes to public relations. That is the main point in chapter 7 of “The Art Of Social Media”. Focusing on the importance of rocking an event by using social media. Kawasaki focuses on beginning with the use of simple hashtags to start out the event. The use of a simple hashtag will help others remember what to use during events and it can be used throughout the years of the event. An example would be #25daysofchristmas which is a hashtag ABC Family uses each year during their christmas movie marathon. This keeps is short and sweet for the ones using it to constantly add to their content. Another really important aspect of an event is making sure it reaches all audiences. Just because an event is in a single location doesn’t mean people outside of the event aren’t interested. Continually find ways to get people who aren’t at the event involved. This can be done through livestreaming, livetweeting, sharing photos and

Forming Connections with Social Media

Every person has a show they enjoy binge-watching and my guilty pleasure is “The Bachelor”. I can’t decide if it is the attractive man going on whimsical dates or the ultimate drama that ensues. I never used to be interested in the show I thought it was boring and overrated. Then ABC stepped up their advertisement and suddenly my twitter feed was flooded with content focused on Colton Underwood. I found it incredible that something so small was able to convince me to spend every Monday night watching a show for two straight hours. I then realized how ingrained and important social media is to our daily decisions. Companies are beginning to use their social media accounts to grab the attention of internet users in a brand new way. An example is ABC and “The Bachelor”. They continually post about the most suspenseful scenes of the episodes. It draws in the viewers of the show and continually gets them to tune into the new episodes. Another example would be Chipotles twitter. The comp

Snow-cation in Ada

Image
Getting snowed in anywhere is a blessing of white, fluffy powder. Getting snowed in while in Ada, Ohio is a curse of epic proportions. This past weekend I got snowed into my sorority house by upwards of 9 inches of white ice. Being the weekend in Ada everyone in the house wanted to have some sort of weekend fun but with a level 3 snow emergency options are limited. That being said, I decided to be prepared for the next snow storm that comes for Ada and creates a list of the best things to do when stuck inside.  1. Calories don’t count during a snowstorm I don’t care what diet plan you are on, it isn’t happening during a snowstorm. Cooking during snow-ins is one of the best time-consuming activities. Sure you may not know how to make chocolate chip cookies from scratch but that’s what the internet is for and that is what trial and error is for. I always bake and cook crazy recipes when I’m bored because you can multitask while cooking which brings me to number two… 2. Fi

Learning to feed the content monster

Image
Social media is a great tool and I’ve been using it ever since my mom let me get facebook when I was maybe 12 years old. Which now that I think about it is too young to be on the internet with a public profile. My facebook still has embarrassing photos of me from 7th grade I swear. In my social media principles class, we are reading a book by Guy Kawasaki called, The Art of Social Media . I’ve only read the first three chapters so far, but each page is beyond insightful. One of my favorite sections is about “feeding the content monster” which is exactly what blogging is like. Finding content, creating said content, and making it interesting enough that those viewing it don’t click away. That may seem easy but it really isn’t. The most useful tip in chapter two for me is the idea of creating an editorial calendar. This is essentially a map of what content to post when, where, why, and to whom. Kawasaki himself is not a huge fan of mapping content out in an editorial calendar bu

Is Netflix ahead of its time?

Black Mirror is a science-fiction / horror show that creates a new, alternate universe to show viewers terrifying outcomes of changing technology and the new world. On December 28th, 2018 Black Mirror released a brand new interactive show where viewers decide the characters fate, named Bandersnatch. Bandersnatch is about a boy named Stefan in 1984 creating an interactive “choose your own adventure” game from a story by his favorite author. The viewers had many different paths they could take Stefan on throughout the episode and they all ventured into the idea of free will. Netflix created very specific excitement around this special episode as the company released the trailer for the show 24 hours before the release date. This choice of marketing is unusual to Netflix’s brand as the company constantly releases trailers two weeks to a month in advance to releases. Twitter blew up with questions and ideas about the new Black Mirror show and all of the ways it could be new and i

Hello, nice to meet you, I'm Karlyn.

Welcome to my first ever blog post! Figuring out topics for blogs is surprisingly much harder than expected, so I’ll take this time to introduce myself to all of you. My name is Karlyn and I’m a junior public relations and journalism major at Ohio Northern University. I transferred into ONU my sophomore from West Virginia University because I visited ONU once and fell absolutely in love. I live in Dayton, Ohio with my ridiculously funny parents and I have an older brother who is off doing grown-up things in Columbus.  My other sibling is my dog, Jack. Jack is probably my favorite living thing in the world, I rescued him from the pound when I was 11 and the rest is history. He is my best friend and always will be. I have a lot of hobbies, I really enjoy keeping busy and staying active so I try to have plenty of things to keep me occupied. I love running and physical activity in general, I get told I am crazy a lot for that exact reason. It i
